13 American Colonies | US History | Kids Academy

A colony is a place where people from other countries have settled outside their home country and this place is governed by their home country. By the mid-1700s England had set up 13 colonies along the East Coast of America.
There were three groups of colonies of the US-based on the way people lived in these colonies.

Northeast
Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts were the colonies in the northeast. Here people came from England mostly for religious freedom. However, living conditions here were tough. The soil was rocky, and the climate was cold hence cultivation was not an option for them. So, they switched to seafood and become sailors. Their ships were made from lumber in the area.

Middle colonies
New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware were the home to Germans, Irish and Dutch. The weather conditions were better here and many crops such as wheat were grown here.

Southern colonies
Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, made up the southern colonies. The climate here was much warmer and had really good soil which helped them to grow all sorts of crops. Their economy was based on agriculture.
One thing common in all these colonies was the slavery of black men. They suffered harsh living conditions and extreme slavery in all the colonies. Eventually, these 13 American colonies became 13 states and now exist as individual states in America.

The United States of America was born out of the yearning of the many people who had traveled there from the old world of Europe to be free of the imperial powers that had dominated them for centuries. To have democracy, liberty, justice for all and to take command of their own destiny.

The birth of the American nation was a painful one, first by having to fight against the forces of the British and then against the indigenous people of North America, within and from outside of the new borders they had declared. In between the many conflicts, the new nation had to establish its own laws, political system and even its own culture none of which developed overnight.

Obviously, there would not always be a consensus. Over the century after 1776 when the United States of America was born, while growing under a political union of the states that it was composed of, it also saw the widening of a cultural divide between the industrious northern states and the agricultural southern states. Perhaps more than anything else, the two sides of this divide found themselves at odds over the question of slavery.

The ethics of owning a person as property became a legal battle between those in support of the practice and those opposed in American courts and halls of power. Eventually, the dispute of course became a real battlefield. More Americans died in the American Civil War that raged on the North American continent between 1861 and 1865 than in any other war in which Americans have fought throughout its history.

And while the battles have long ended, the ramifications of the civil war continue to be felt to this very day in America over issues such as culture and of course race. So, let us delve into the history of this dark chapter of American history.

Then he was shot, Andrew Johnson took over, and the disagreements between Johnson and Congress ensured that Reconstruction would fail. Charles Austin Beard was the most influential American historian of the early 20th century. He published hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. He graduated from DePauw University in 1898, where he met and eventually married Mary Ritter Beard, one of the founders of the first Greek-letter society for women, Kappa Alpha Theta. Many of his books were written in collaboration with his wife, whose own interests lay in feminism and the labor union movement (Woman as a Force in History, 1946).

In 1921, Charles and Mary Beard published their History of the United States. A contemporaneous review stated: "The authors... assume enough maturity in high school students to justify a topical rather than a chronological treatment. They have dealt with movements, have sketched large backgrounds, have traced causes, and have discussed the interrelation of social and economic forces and politics. All this has been directed to the large purpose of helping the student to understand American today in all its national characteristics and as part of world civilization as well...The literary style is exceptionally clear and crisp, and the whole approach...is thought producing. As a textbook or handbook for the average citizen it ranks with very best." (Summary by M.L. Cohen)

In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided to try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is.

Filmed between September 8-13, 1929, in Portland, Maine. This was the 63rd National GAR Encampment for Union soldiers of the Civil War. Video was upscaled to 4k, adjusted to 60fps and colorized for clarity.

On September 8, 1929, Elise Fellows White, a native of Skowhegan who was living in Portland, Maine at the time, wrote this in her journal:

"Portland is full of old soldiers. The Grand Army of the Republic is holding one of their encampments here. A trainload of five hundred came in today from Portland, Oregon. As we drove down Congress Street we saw the blue coats with medals and the broad brimmed hats and gray heads. They all carry themselves with great dignity. My mother remarked how we miss poor Uncle Charlie. He would have been here.
These soldiers have a characteristic expression. Sargent’s portrait of General Chamberlain shows it. The picture of the veteran with the empty sleeve shows it: eyes large, rather hollow-set, with drooping lids and a look of deep sadness. Well, we shall hear the "doings," speeches, etc. over the radio, and they will be good."
