1. Use The Right Tool
Please, oh please use the right tool! We like MailChimp because it has A/B testing built into the system. You need a reputable system that is collecting your e-mails. Pretty straight forward, on to tip #2.

2. Subject Lines
Psst...not sure if you know this but, people look at the subject line of your e-mail before opening it. As much time as you spend creating wonderful copy inside of your e-mail, people will judge you based on your subject lines. You definitely want to spend some time on crafting something creative.

3. A/B Test
A/B test those subject lines! How can you know if what you do works? If you have more than 5,000 people who receive your newsletter then you need to be doing this. Test two different subject lines on 5% of your audience and see which one they open. You will be shocked at the results. Some e-mails get 100% differentials, meaning they get opened twice as much. This is worth doing.

4. Segmentation Is Your BFF
You don't want to be getting the same gift for Christmas that your grandma, uncle, and mom got. Awkward. IF you have more than 30,000 people on your list then you need to divide it by engagement, donor, region, etc. Be creative. Send different newsletters to different lists.

5. Spam Sucks!
Don't - be - spammy. There are certain keywords that are automatically going to get flagged, and your e-mails won't even be seen. Also, you want to make sure your domain's reputation is good. There are some free tools that allow you to monitor your online reputation. We highly recommend WatchGuard.

6. Consider Timing
The only time you should ever send your newsletter out is...something we would never say. This always depends on your audience. Sure there are better times when to send it but you need to test this. The results might be different each week, and sometimes the unexpected time frame gets higher open rates.

7. Mobilize It!
Just today, you probably have opened at least one e-mail on your mobile device. Think about how your audience experiences your newsletter on their smartphone. Are they seeing the pictures? Is the text lined up? Remember, they don't want to read a novel. The number of people opening their e-mails on their mobile devices is increasing day by day. Remember that, and pay attention to how your e-mail looks.

8. Focused Call-To-Action
Guess what people don't want to see when they open your newsletter? A million different topics. Make your e-mail focused. What is the single call to action? What is the one thing you want them to do? This will do wonders in terms of conversion rate. Sending a general newsletter is fine. However, focus on crafting another one that calls to action.

9. Learn From Experts
Research the people that are doing this well. There are organizations that are changing things up constantly, and they keep getting it right. What we recommend doing is: Create a research e-mail account and start signing up. If you want to learn from the best then look at; DNC, RNC, NRA, PPFA, Avaaz.

0:56 - Email Marketing Tip #1: Segment your lists.
It can be really difficult to resonate with every single person you're trying to email if you're not catering to their particular needs. What you can do is you can use your email marketing services tags feature, or segment feature to cut out your list into more specific groups.
The purpose of this is to make sure that you're providing meaningful context behind every message that you're sending out in your email campaigns.
2:06 - Email Marketing Tip #2: Audit your lists.
Whether you've had your list for just one year or five years it ain't get really easy to get an unwieldy list. And that leads to two potential outcomes, either your list is no longer engaging with you or it's not getting you the results that you want.
The problem with either of these issues is that it leads to you creating a negative feedback loop for yourself. If you're creating a ton of email campaigns and trying really hard to engage your list, but they're not engaging with you, then you're going to be a little bit less motivated to write your next email campaign to your audience.
4:08 - Email Marketing Tip #3: Validate your lists.
This is especially helpful if you've purchased your leads from a lead gen site. Whenever my company has done so, we've had to run our lists through Email List Verify or another email validation service, just to make sure that we remove any bogus emails or spam traps.
Email List Verify is really simple to use. All you need to do is upload your list on their site, click validate, and then wait for the results. Once the results have been generated, it'll tell you specifically which emails are valid and which emails are invalid.

It's really important to validate your emails because if you have bought your list, it can be really common for there to be spam traps in a bot list. And as a result, it'll potentially impact the deliverability of your future campaigns.
5:56 - Email Marketing Tip #4: A/B test your email campaigns.
By A/B testing, we're going to be able to better identify which subject tests will resonate with our audience more as well as which call-to-actions or body copy is going to be more effective.
7:14 - Email Marketing Tip #5: Always be able to answer ANA.
ANA stands for Audience, Needs and Ask. This is an acronym that I came up with for my team to teach them some email marketing principles.
Audience is all about who am I writing for and what do they care about?
Needs is all about making sure that you are meeting a particular and specific need of our audience.
Ask is all about what is our ask and is it clear?
ANA is the key to effective email marketing, and it really encapsulates a ton of the tips that I've gone over in this email marketing series.
8:21 - Two Big Takeaways to Remember:
1. Make sure you are practicing good list hygiene, that you're validating your list and auditing your list on a regular basis.
2. Remember the acronym, ANA. Always be able to answer who your audience is, what their need is and what your ask is in the campaign.

An SMTP relay is a protocol that allows email to be transmitted through the internet, collecting email from the sender and delivering it to the recipient’s local inbox, another SMTP server.
This is why it's so important to have a strong SMTP relay server on the sender side. If the receiving server does not recognize it, you run the risk of being blocked.
